The Woodhouse Lodge is a small hotel, restaurant and bar on the eastern edge of the Catskills, about thirty minutes west of the Hudson River and two and a half hours from New York City. It is not a barn and it is not a ballroom. It is a property you take over, where the bar you are drinking at is the same bar that serves dinner, and the people running your wedding are the people who run the place every other day of the year.

A wedding here moves between the main lodge, the tavern and the grounds, and on a clear day you will use all three. The outdoor areas are landscaped for ceremonies and for the long stretch of a reception that spills outside, which is what makes this venue work better than its size suggests. Guests wander out, play a round of cornhole, find somebody they have not seen in years, and come back in. Nobody is trapped in one room for six hours.

There are ten cabin-style guest rooms on the property, in four layouts: the Loft sleeps up to six across two bedrooms, the Double takes four, the Queen three, and the King two. That is enough for the people who should not be driving home, and the rest of your guest list is within a short drive.

Food comes out of the Tavern, the property’s own restaurant, built on locally farmed ingredients with menus designed for your day rather than picked from a list. The bar runs to natural wines and homemade cocktails. At the last wedding I photographed here the kitchen sent out pizzas, pasta and salad, and it was as good as anything the restaurant serves on a normal night. If you want something specific, it is a conversation rather than a form.

The Woodhouse Lodge does not publish capacity, buyout terms or pricing on its own website, and the third-party listings vary enough that repeating one here would be guessing. What it does say is that staff are on site for the length of your stay. Ask them directly, and ask early, because a property this size books on availability rather than on packages.

Two things matter here if you are thinking about photographs. The first is that the whole property is walkable, so portraits do not cost you forty minutes in a car and you can step out for ten minutes during cocktail hour without anybody noticing you have gone. The second is that the day does not have a single fixed room, so a documentary approach has somewhere to go. The best frames I have made here were people drifting between the lawn and the bar, not anything I set up.
