Caitlyn & Robby’s MASS MoCA Wedding
MASS MoCA is just a quick day trip from Albany, and I’ve visited many times over the years to see the museum’s exhibitions. When I learned that they hosted weddings as well, I knew it would be amazing, but Caitlyn & Robby’s MASS MoCA wedding surpassed all expectations.
Guests began the day gathering in the museum’s front courtyard. It was a perfect early summer afternoon, with bright skies and a cool breeze setting the tone for the day. Friends and family mingled and took photos against MASS MoCA’s striking industrial architecture before heading inside for the ceremony.
The wedding itself was seamlessly woven throughout the museum’s spaces. MASS MoCA’s unique blend of art and architecture created an unforgettable backdrop, with something visually striking around every corner.
Cocktail hour was held inside Jeffrey Gibson’s POWER FULL BECAUSE WE’RE DIFFERENT installation in Building 5, where guests were immersed in vibrant colors and sound. It was an experience that everyone in attendance will never forget.
As the evening continued, Gabby aka DJ BFG kept the energy high in one of the museum’s massive event spaces. With a disco ball overhead and colorful lighting filling the room, the dance floor stayed packed until the very end. It was the perfect finale to a wedding day that felt as artistic, dynamic, and inspiring as the museum itself.
How We Met
We met on tinder!
Our Engagement Story
Rob proposed to me seven days into a 10 day trip to Morocco. He carried a dummy ring around with him in the most obnoxious women’s sunglasses case so he could hide it in plain sight (as if carrying a women’s sunglasses case was less weird than a ring box). After we had taken a small tour of Chefchaouen, Morocco’s blue city, Rob slipped the tour guide some cash and asked him to take us back one of the spots on the tour “for a photo”, where he then proposed. It was beautiful.
He must’ve tipped the guy pretty well because he then led us all the way back through the tour for more photo ops.
Marriage to us means…
Choosing and having the privilege to experience every future experience with this person. Being witness to the rest of each others lives.
How did you choose your venue/location?
With Rob’s family being from Wisconsin, we knew that if half our wedding had to fly in we wanted to throw a wedding that felt unforgettable. MASS MoCA made that pretty easy. We also had a few dates there early on in our relationship and are continuously awestruck by the museum.
A memorable moment from our wedding was…
Rob and I danced together to Oasis’ Don’t Look Back in Anger as the final song of the night. We were circled by friends and family scream-singing while we held each other in the middle.
If I could give other couples to be one piece of advice…
The people around you make the wedding— both those who you choose to invite and those who you choose to work with.
Planning is stressful but we felt immense calm the moment we saw eachother at each end of the aisle. It all works out how it should.
